Tubes in his ears

So my son began school in January 2005 and commenced with a year long cold. As a result, he ended up having 4 ear infections. While the ear infections got better, he was left with fluid in his ears that distorted his hearing and consequently his speech. Yesterday, he had tubes put in his ears to prevent this from happening again. They will fall out within the next 9-12 months and the fluid has been suctioned so I think it's a whole new world for him once the swelling and everything goes down and he begins to hear more accurately.

But what a drama to actually get the tubes put in.

We report to the outpatient surgery center at 6:30 am. Please note the child could not eat or drink and we ended up scooping him pj's and all into the car and taking him there. We check in and have to wait until after 8 am before the procedure is done. By this time, he's bored and ready to leave, but is mollified after he's allowed to play with the IV stand and wheel it all over the place.

I had to get gowned and capped to go into the OR, because he refused to go with anyone else. Then it took 4 of us to hold him down and actually be gassed to go to sleep. It took a good two minutes before he was out. They actually have little face masks and they smell like bubble gum to get the kids accostomed to what's going to happen to them in the OR. The procedure takes about 10 minutes so within 25 minutes, I get called to come stay with my little munchkin in Recovery. Well, that was an experience. I have never been assaulted that much in my life. It was 30 minutes of utter torture as I was kicked, slapped, scrapped, shouted at and generally made to feel like a horrible individual. From what I understand, the first 15 minutes he was still basically out of it and so very disoriented and then the next 15 minutes, he was just plain pissed off. Finally, he fell asleep and we got him his meds and then moved on home.

Last night, he came and lay down with me in bed and curled into my side and refused to move. It was kind of nice that he wanted to bond withme that way. I slept perched on the edge of the bed because he refused to move and he felt so yummy beside me even as I realized that he was running a low-grade fever. So today I'm a nervous Mom calling his grandma every 30 minutes to make sure he's drinking because that's the only way the fever'll go away.

All this stress for two tiny tubes in his ears. Life certainly ain't easy.
