Commence the commercialization

One of my goals in life is to not have a child driven by commercialization. It is the reason that I've only allowed my son to watch PBS. The other channels are inundated with shows that have accompanying products. What I've enjoyed watching is the fact that my son doesn't really require a lot of money to make him happy. His favorite toys are inevitably the cheapest and he loves nothing more than spending time with us. Even if he does watch a Wiggles tape (over and over again) what he really wants is for me to dance to all the songs with him. When we watches Elmo, he always runs to tell me the latest plot line so that we share it together.

Now that he's 3, we figured that he'd be excited about Christmas and all his gifts. He ended up opening his gifts at about 7 the night after everyone had left from Christmas brunch. In fact, he's more interested in wrapping a gift to give someone than in getting a gift. I hope that this is something that stays with him and I will strive to keep it so.

One thing, however, that has crept in is his knowledge of some of his favorite spots. He loves Publix and can tell a Publix sign wherever he sees one. He scours the parking lot looking for the racing cart buggy and then literally yanks your hand out of the socket to go and get it. He can also exercise extreme patience when standing outside the door waiting for a cart to appear. It is only with extreme relulctance will he decide to use a regular cart and wo betide us should he spot a vacant cart. He will leap up and do handflips to get into said vacant cart.

Today the hubby called because he had the little munchkin. They were on the road and as they passed the great golden arches of McDonalds, the little one pipes in.
"Want something to eat." and points towards said arches. Now, we do allow him to have Mcdonalds from time to time since Friday night is family night where we either sit and home and pig out or go out on a family outing. I just find it hilarious that he can pass all other establishments and decide that Mickey D's is the spot for lunch. He doesn't know the name of the place, he simply calls it fries. Too funny.
