An education in being male

So since my son was about 2 1/2 we've been trying to do the potty training thing. I figured that it would not be as easy as with a girl, but I never anticipated that I'd still be doing this almost a year later. I will agree that we weren't very aggressive with the training because he had so many other issues (hearing, fluid in ears, etc) but by the time we began to be aggressive we realized that he had no interest in potty training.

Anyway, about a month ago, we realized that this was really silly. He was 3 and needed to get with the program. We began some intensive work. Within a week, he'd gotten with the program. Now I can proudly say, that my son will go potty and do number 1 with great ease. I no logner have to help him, I simply send him on his way and he does his business. I don't know how simple that will be with number 2 on which he is still steadfastly holding on to using a pullup.

My greatest education, however, came when upon dropping my son to school one morning I took him to the bathroom to prevent any future accidents. While there he calmly walked to the urinal. I knew a moment's panic because I know nothing of urinals. There was another little boy standing beside him and I wanted to sneak a peak to see what he was doing but I know that that is strongly frowned upon in the men's room. Maybe they'd let me slide since I was female. Anyway, I pulled down his pants convinced he was going to have pee all over them. He then amazed me by pushing his lower body forward (pretty much like his next door neighbor) and there came forth a sream of pee. As he was about to finish, he reached up and pulled down the level and et voila, the urinal flushed. We washed our hands and left the bathroom.

All the way to work I was smiling. My son has just initiated me into the ancient male art of using a urinal.
